Bologna

A large building with a tower

Description automatically generated

The heart of Bologna is its medieval city centre, enclosed within the city walls – today replaced by a ring-road; only the city’s “porte” (gates) remains. While numerous public transports are available, everything within the walls is easily accessible on foot within a 20-40 minute walk. Walking under Bologna’s ancient porticos will lead you through a network of narrow zig-zag lanes, ultimately guiding you to the broader streets, the main square (Piazza Maggiore), and the Two Towers (Due Torri). Beneath the porticos, you will discover traditional street food vendors, Italian and international restaurants, souvenir shops, and unique fashion boutiques.

The University and the Department of the Arts

The Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna is the oldest university in the western world, continuously operating since the 11th century. University activities are widely distributed throughout Bologna, both within the historic centre and its outskirts in ancient and modern complexes, as well as a multicampus system located in the main urban centres surrounding Bologna.

The Department of the Arts (DAR) was established in 2012 through the merger of the Department of Visual Arts and the Department of Drama and Music Studies. Its comprehensive scientific and educational approach has enabled the continued development of the artistic domain, gaining full recognition within the Italian university system. This recognition was significantly strengthened by the University of Bologna fifty years ago with the inauguration of the Degree in Drama, Art, and Music Studies (DAMS) in 1970/1971.

While the DAR is organised across four different locations, its headquarters is situated at Palazzo Marescotti on via Barberia 4. This Renaissance building, later embellished with baroque decorations and architectures, served various functions over time, including housing the provincial headquarters for the Communist Party and the Gramsci Institute. In 1997, it was acquired by the University of Bologna to host the Department of Music and Drama Studies.
